Laundry Day

Poetry (2019)

Winner of The May Star Poetry Prize.

Laundry Day is the final chapter of a trilogy that began with A Village Manual and continued with Big Oil Tankers. The book describes a journey between village and city, dreams and reality, childhood memories and past loves, with topics ranging from a tire shop and Reykjavík’s sanitation services to Michael Jordan. The narrator travels through both inner and outer realities on the way to his destination, the surroundings expressed in vivid imagery.

Laundry Day was awarded the Maístjarnan Poetry Prize by the Writer’s Union of Iceland and the National and University Library of Iceland. “Laundry Day is a exceptionally rich and enigmatic book of poetry. The poems are characterised by powerful and fascinating imagery, and while the subject matter may at times be serious, a subtle sense of humour is never far away. This is a strong, sophisticated work that provokes and moves the reader.”
